Uses
Oregano is a classic of the spice rack, and one of its best-known uses is on top of a steaming, oven-fresh pizza. Oregano is, however, a far more versatile spice than that, and it is used in a variety of pasta, tomato, meat, vegetable and chicken dishes. It is a popular spice in Mexican, Italian and Greek cuisine – so don’t hesitate to try oregano with all kinds of dishes! An omelette, for instance, or various bakes, sauces and oven-roasted root vegetables all gain depth and flavour from oregano.
Experimenting with spices
Spices are a simple way to refresh familiar dishes and bring old recipes to life. Trying out new spices is easy and fun, and while experimenting with new combinations you might just come up with a new signature recipe! The usual recommendations for using spices offer inspiration for jazzing up your dishes, but in reality only your imagination sets the limits once you start experimenting boldly with spices! A simple pasta, an easy risotto, a salad or other everyday dishes are easily made flavourful with spices in particular. Balance is the most important thing – as you gain practice in using spices, you begin to grasp which herb brings out the aromas of which dish, and in what proportion the spice is best used.
