Year-round intake
We need vitamin D all year round, but its intake deserves particular attention during the dark seasons.
Suitability
Lactose-free, gluten-free, yeast-free, dairy-free, unsweetened / sugar-free
Upper safe intake limits
Upper safe intake limits for vitamin D in the EU. The tolerable upper intake levels set by EFSA are: 50 µg for children aged 1–11, 100 µg for those over 11 years of age.
Origin of the vitamin D
Where does the vitamin D in Aurinko D come from? For medicines, food supplements and foodstuffs, vitamin D is produced with the help of ultraviolet light from a natural raw material of animal origin, a cholesterol derivative (7-dehydrocholesterol). This is exactly the same process that takes place in human skin under the influence of sunlight. The vast majority of vitamin D3 products contain vitamin D3 produced in precisely this way, as does the Aurinko D food supplement. The vitamin D we use is manufactured by a major European producer. The raw material, dehydrocholesterol, is obtained sustainably from sheep’s wool during shearing – i.e. in an animal-friendly way.
Individual needs
The body’s ability to utilise vitamin D varies a great deal from person to person. The same amount of vitamin D raises the blood vitamin D level only slightly in some people and many times more in others. The only way to know your own need is to take the same dose for a few months and have your blood vitamin D level measured. According to measurements carried out in Finland, only about 30% of the population reaches the target level of over 75 nmol/l. An adequate blood vitamin D concentration is 75–250 nmol/l.
