What is spirulina
Spirulina is a microscopic freshwater algae, so it is not a seaweed. Spirulina grows quickly, which makes its production extremely efficient, and no environmentally burdening pesticides or chemicals are needed to produce it.
Colour and pigments
The deep, dark green-blue colour of spirulina reflects the colour pigments it contains, namely chlorophyll. This blue-green microalgae has a spiral-shaped structure, which is naturally where the name spirulina comes from. The strong blue-green colour of spirulina comes from its rich chlorophyll content as well as from an extremely rare blue colour pigment, phycocyanin.
History
Historically, two civilisations are known to have consumed spirulina in abundance: the people who lived in the Mexico City area of Central America, and the peoples who lived in the Lake Chad region of Africa. Spirulina has existed on Earth practically ever since there has been life here.
