What spirulina is

Spirulina is a microscopic freshwater alga, not a seaweed. Spirulina grows quickly, which makes its production extremely efficient, and no environmentally burdening pesticides or chemicals are needed to produce it.

Colour and structure

Spirulina’s deep, dark green-blue colour comes from the colour pigments it contains, namely chlorophyll. This blue-green microalga has a spiral-shaped structure, which is naturally where the name spirulina comes from. Spirulina’s strong blue-green colour comes from its rich chlorophyll content as well as from an extremely rare blue colour pigment, phycocyanin.

History

Historically, two civilisations are known to have consumed spirulina in abundance: the people living in the Mexico City area of Central America, and the peoples living in the Lake Chad area of Africa. Spirulina has existed on Earth practically ever since there has been life here.

Use

Use: Enjoy the powder mixed into a liquid such as water or juice, or in a fruity smoothie. At first, the taste of greens and microalgae feels too strong to many. To soften the bitter taste, we warmly recommend citrus fruits, such as lemon juice. An acidic element balances bitter green flavours brilliantly. Always combine green powders and tablets with good oils and/or fats as well, such as high-quality olive oil. Fat also masks the flavour and improves the absorption of fat-soluble compounds.
