L-arginine
L-arginine is one of the 20 amino acids that make up proteins. It is usually classified as a non-essential, and sometimes as a conditionally essential, amino acid.
Dietary sources
Arginine is found in high-protein foods such as meat, fish, nuts and whole grains. Nuts and sesame are particularly rich in arginine. The need for arginine increases during periods of strain.
The tablet
Bioteekki L-arginine, made in Finland, comes as a plant-based, easy-to-swallow almond-shaped tablet containing 500 mg of L-arginine.
Use
Amino acids taken as food supplements are consumed on an empty stomach so that their absorption is as efficient as possible and so that they do not have to compete with the amino acids from food for transport into the cells.
About amino acids
The human body contains more than 100,000 proteins in total, and amino acids are their small “building blocks”. All human proteins are built from just 20 amino acids, 11 of which the body can produce itself, while the remaining 9 must be obtained daily from food or food supplements. The diet should be varied enough to secure the daily intake of essential amino acids. A mixed diet secures amino acid intake best, but the intake of essential amino acids can also be secured by combining plant proteins (legumes, seeds, nuts, grain products) in a varied way every day.
