Folic acid (also folate) belongs to the group of essential water-soluble B vitamins.
What is homocysteine?
Homocysteine is an amino acid formed as part of the body’s normal metabolism. High blood homocysteine levels are not desirable and have been linked to low levels of folic acid and vitamin B12.
What is folate?
The two different terms, folic acid and folate, can sometimes be confusing. Folate is the natural form of the nutrient, found in green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, orange juice and beans, for example. Supplements contain a synthetically produced equivalent form called folic acid. It has been found to be absorbed by our bodies better than the folate in food. Folate is easily destroyed by sunlight, heat and water, which is why the folate content of food decreases during storage and cooking.
