Tryptophan
Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that the body cannot produce itself, so it must be obtained from the diet. Tryptophan is needed as a building block for proteins and for the formation of serotonin.
Serotonin and melatonin
In the brain, tryptophan is converted into serotonin, a neurotransmitter that has a positive effect on mood, as well as into melatonin, which regulates the circadian rhythm and calms sleep.
