White Swan Ozonated sesame oil, 50 ml

Background

Ozonated sesame oil is the newest and most promising arrival on the ozonated oil market. The first published studies on its use date only from 2009. In terms of fatty acid composition, sesame oil closely resembles sunflower oil. The use of ozonated sunflower oil became common in Cuba as early as the 1980s, and from there it spread to many other countries. If you add together the studies conducted on both ozonated sunflower oil and ozonated sesame oil, together these are better researched than ozonated olive oil, which is regarded as the old classic.

Degree of Ozonation

In terms of its peroxide value, which indicates the degree of ozonation, White Swan’s ozonated sesame oil matches the world’s most studied ozonated oil, namely the ozonated sunflower oil known under the trade name Oleozon.

Product Range History

During the company’s first months, White Swan produced both ozonated sunflower oil and ozonated sesame oil. Because of their similarity, however, there was no reason to keep both in production. High-quality sesame oil has been more readily available. Sesame oil contains antioxidants that improve the oil’s shelf life, such as sesamol and sesamin. Its shelf life is indeed better than that of sunflower oil. So ozonated sesame oil remained in production in the normal strength. Of the individual products, it has been the most popular of all.

Production and Raw Material

White Swan’s ozonated sesame oil is made in Finland at the production facilities in Jyväskylä. Only high-quality cold-pressed organic virgin sesame oil is used as the starting material. Most often the oil’s country of origin has been Mexico, but oils from elsewhere that meet the requirements can also be used.

Normal Strength and Ozonides

White Swan produces ozonated sesame oil only in the so-called normal strength. This results in an ideal amount of ozonides forming in the oil. Ozonides are reaction products that form when ozone gas reacts with the double bonds of fatty acids, and they are precisely the biologically most important groups occurring in the oil.

Texture and Scent

The drawbacks of the oil are its greasiness and unpleasant odour. The odour is of course a matter of taste, and opinions on how unpleasant it is vary a great deal. Still, hardly anyone would call it pleasant. Compared with the corresponding ozonated olive oil, ozonated sesame oil is more fluid, and it comes out of the pump bottle easily even when cold, which can sometimes be problematic with normal-strength ozonated olive oil.

Use

The oils are used by applying them to the area being treated 1–3 times a day. The odour and greasiness may limit their use, especially during the daytime around other people. The oils are intended particularly for skin care; otherwise, contact with mucous membranes is not dangerous.

Yield and Shelf Life

The oils are pure fats and therefore go a very long way, since even a small drop spreads over a large area. Thus a 50 ml bottle, which may seem small, usually lasts a long time. The shelf life of the oils is limited. In the refrigerator they retain most of their potency for about 1.5 years and at room temperature for about six months. If the oil is used up within a few months, refrigerated storage is therefore not necessary. The “best before” date marked on the products, however, applies only to a product stored in the refrigerator.

Quality and Safety

White Swan’s normal-strength ozonated sesame oil is quite low in acidity and aldehyde content, because ozonation is stopped before these undesirable groups begin to form in greater quantities. The products are analysed regularly. The shelf life of the products has been studied and a thorough safety assessment required by law has been carried out, according to which White Swan normal ozonated sesame oil meets the requirements laid down by EU cosmetics legislation.

Product Type and Packaging

White Swan’s normal ozonated sesame oil is a cosmetic product, and no health claims are made about it. Unlike with olive oil, White Swan produces ozonated sesame oil only in the normal strength. When strongly ozonated, sesame oil becomes unpleasantly sticky, so in the strong version olive oil is better. The product is sold in a 50 ml pump bottle whose plastics contain no plasticisers and which is fully compatible with ozonated fats.
