What Spirulina Is

Spirulina is a microscopic freshwater algae that, once dried, becomes a deep blue-green powder. Since ancient times, spirulina has been a rich source of nourishment in many cultures, for example in the Americas, Africa and the Middle East.

Composition

More than 60% of spirulina’s weight is complete protein. Spirulina has no cell walls, which is why it breaks down easily during digestion.

Structure and Colour

True to its name, spirulina has a spiral-shaped structure. Its intense blue-green colour comes from a rich chlorophyll content as well as from a rare blue pigment, phycocyanin.

Origin and Quality

There are only a few countries in the world with a naturally ideal sunny climate for producing this freshwater algae. These are Japan, Taiwan, India, Greece, Spain and the United States. Puhdistamo’s Spirulina is grown in Taiwan in an ideally warm climate, in naturally pure mountain spring water. Our high-quality spirulina contains no heavy metals or chemical pollutants.
